Diabetes

What is Diabetes?

There are three main types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes, which affect how your body is able to turn food into energy. Normally, your pancreas will release insulin in response to glucose (from food), in your bloodstream. Insulin triggers the cells to bring in glucose and store it for energy. With diabetes, your body either does not produce enough insulin or it does not respond appropriately to insulin, so too much glucose remains in your blood.

Type 1 Diabetes occurs when your body makes too little insulin or none at all. Although Type 1 diabetes is commonly called Juvenile Diabetes, because it is often detected in childhood, it can be triggered by autoimmune reactions later in life, and can be diagnosed at any age. Many Type 1 Diabetics require insulin medication, but addressing proper lifestyle and health habits have been shown to dramatically reduce the amount of insulin required to maintain healthy blood glucose levels.

Type 2 Diabetes occurs when your cells become resistant to insulin, requiring more and more insulin to be released to maintain healthy blood glucose levels. Eventually your body is unable to sustain healthy blood glucose levels. This is the most common type of diabetes and was previously diagnosed primarily in adults, but is becoming more prevalent in children. Type 2 diabetes has been proven to be reversible with proper lifestyle and health habits.

Gestational Diabetes develops in a pregnant woman who did not have a previous diagnosis of Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes goes away after your baby is born,  however, it increases risk of health issues for the baby and may increase your risk of Type 2 diabetes later in life.

Prediabetes is when blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough for a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. As with Type 2 diabetes, prediabetes has been proven to be reversible with proper lifestyle and health habits.

Common Symptoms of Diabetes:

Diabetes may go undiagnosed until the symptoms are severe. If you experience any of the following, these could be red flags that you are pre-diabetic or diabetic.

• unusual weight gain
• excessive thirst
• blurred vision
• frequent infections
• extreme hunger (even after eating)
• irritability
• blood sugar issues
• chronic fatigue
• low or high blood pressure
• numbness and tingling in hands and feet
